A letter from Phelim and Amanda-Clare

On behalf of The Turlough Meehan Research Foundation, we wish to express a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in the First Annual Mighty Meehan Run for Research, which was held on Sunday, September 14th at West Dennis Beach.  An amazing total of 691 men, women and children gathered on a wet miserable morning to either walk or run the 3.1 miles in order to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Research Department to help find a cure for Infant Leukemia.

We would especially like to thank the Town of Dennis Board of Selectmen, Beach and Recreation Departments, D.P.W, Police, Fire Department and the Yarmouth Fire Department for their assistance.  To the volunteers from the road crew, registration, parking, those folks who handed out water and post-race refreshments and to the committee members, you all deserve credit for the great effort that you provided.  Your individual tasks were so very important to the overall success of the event.

A special thanks also goes out to our sponsors who donated both monetary and gifts–in–kind, including the Cape Cod Times.  You believed in our Foundation which is a start-up one with no history, except for the story of our son Turlough, who passed away at five months and twenty-five days from infant ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia).  You supported us because you also believed that no infant should have to suffer from this insidious disease and no family should have to suffer the loss of an innocent child.

Thanks so much to Jimmy Mullen and John Shaw who volunteered the use of Clancy’s Fish & Chips for our post race awards ceremony even before a date was set for the race.  Your staff, along with The East Dennis Oyster Farm and Krista K’s Ice Cream provided a spectacular feast for all who attended.

To Joe McDonnell who organized the live entertainment at Clancy’s Fish & Chips, our thanks go out to you and all the musicians who provided entertainment throughout the day; you always go above and beyond when called upon.

A special thank you to Kevin Morley who through his organizational skills and many check lists, managed to keep us all organized, safe and  coordinated a very successful race.

Lastly we would like to thank Dr. Lewis Silverman, Teresa Donahue, RN and Heather Schneipp, RN who traveled down from Boston to run the race and who had to drive back up to work that evening.  Through the commitment, knowledge and caring from the staff at Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber, we were given four and a half months of extra precious time with our son Turlough.  That time was made possible due to previous research.

We started The Turlough Meehan Research Foundation in memory of our son, with the goal of raising awareness and money for continued research to find a cure for Infant Leukemia.  With the help and encouragement you all gave us with the First Annual Mighty Meehan Run, we are on our way.

Please visit us at www.mightymeehan.com for further information on how you can continue to help our Foundation.

Once again, thank you so very much for your support and generosity.
